1. What is FTP

FTP is a standard network protocol. It is commonly used to transfer computer files from one host to another host over a network such as Local Area Network (LAN) or the internet.

It is a helpful method to help you move files to your web server, especially if you’re moving a large number of files at once. Other functions you can do using FTP are:

  • Upload
  • Download
  • Move
  • Copy
  • Delete
  • Rename

2. How to Access your FTP

You have two ways of accessing your FTP, via the internet browser or using an FTP Client. But first, we’ll locate your FTP login credentials via your Hosting Manager.

Find your FTP Credentials

Step 1. Log in to your cPanel.
Step 2. On the Home page, click the User icon on the left panel.

Step 3. On this page, you’ll see all the user accounts, who have email, FTP or Web Disk that are associated with your domain name.

Step 4. Select the FTP user account you want to view and click Edit.

Step 5. You’ll see the information of the FTP account, including the username and domain name it is linked to.

Now that you have your FTP credentials, let’s access your FTP.

Access via the Internet browser

To make the connection, follow the steps below:

  1. Open a web browser tab.
  2. Put “ftp” before your domain name and TLD in the browser address.
    Example: ftp.[yourdomain].com
  3. A pop-up box will appear. Type in your username and password. Click Log In.

The files and folders in your domain’s home directory will be displayed in the next page.

Access via an FTP Client

Accessing FTP using an FTP client you will need the following information:

Host name yourdomain.com - You can use your domain for the host name.
ftp.yourdomain.com - All domains are set up with an "FTP" subdomain which can also be used as the host name.
server IP address - Your server IP can also be used for the host name.
Username Connect to your FTP using your Hosting Manager username.
Password Connect to your FTP using your Hosting Manager password.
Port This is the port that your FTP connection will be using. The default port is 21.
Directory The main directory for your domain will be public_html. When you log in, you will be automatically pointed to this directory.

Once you have your FTP information ready, you can now use it to manage your webspace via an FTP Client. There are different FTP clients available.
